A
group of young people from junior football club’s
Clayton Villa and Medlock
Rangers joined City legend and club ambassador Mike
Summerbee
last week to lend support to Manchester being a host
city in England’s
2018 FIFA World Cup bid.
The
event saw the young people work with coaches from
City in the Community and demonstrate
their football skills at Spinningfields in the city
centre.
Local
hip-hop band Kid British also played a fifteen
minute live set, with message of supports from
City strikers Ade Adebayor and Carlos Tevez as a
back drop.
Mike
said: “To host a World Cup in Manchester would be
amazing for supporters no matters who
they follow.
“Fans
here are extremely knowledgeable but also warm and
friendly. We have a history of welcoming
others to this great city of ours.”
Manchester
City Council leader, Sir Richard Leese said: “The
World Cup is arguable the greatest
sporting spectacle on the planet and bringing it to
Manchester would make for an unforgettable
occasion.
“But
other cities are vying for the right to host World
Cup games if England’s bid is successful and
it’s really important that people here show how
much we want it.”
The
FA will decide in December which cities will host
games if its bid to host the 2018, or 2022, World
Cups is successful. Blues
Manager Mark Hughes said: “There’s a huge
passion in England certainly in Manchester.
As a city, we’ve got two outstanding international
class arenas and training facilities
that would lend themselves to any team that was
based here.”
City
fans are being urged to support the bid by register
their support via a special pledge
